McDonald's character in HBO movie Lady Day At Emerson Bar Restaurant earned her a four-time Emmy nomination in the year 2016. The Bite is a drama featuring six episodes that are based on an epidemic, produced with Spectrum Originals & CBS Studios. McDonald starred in the show with Taylor Schilling & Steven Pasquale. She first appeared on the show in the role of U.S. attorney Liz Lawrence in 2009 on CBS's medical drama The Good Wife in 2018 McDonald returned to her part (now called Liz Reddick) as a season regular on The Good Fight on Paramount+ receiving three Critics Choice Award nominations for her role. She is also a guest on the HBO series The Gilded Age by Julian Fellowes.
