Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford began to become fascinated by acting during her teens, she joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one month, she decided that it wasn't the right fit for her. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement at the third time she applied for and was awarded acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He would go on to have frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in such programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies which were added to Tate's repertoire in 1996.
